NZIS Teen Runs 137km to Raise Awareness for Domestic Violence

Rhys Blissett, a 17-year-old NZ Institute of Sport (NZIS) student from Christchurch, embarked on a remarkable 137-kilometer run from Rolleston to Ashburton and back. His goal: to raise awareness and funds for Women’s Refuge, a cause deeply personal to him.

Rhys’s childhood was fraught with challenges, as he and his family sought refuge from domestic violence in foster homes and shelters. These experiences left him grappling with instability and trauma, but they also instilled in him a determination to break the cycle and make a difference.

Throughout his youth, Rhys often felt isolated, attending eight different schools and struggling to form lasting connections. “I grew up thinking the violence I experienced was normal, something everyone went through,” he shared during a recent talk at Te Koromiko Swannanoa School. Yet, despite the adversity, he took control of his life at just 16. Balancing a full-time job with school, he secured stable housing and enrolled in the Police preparation programme at NZIS in Christchurch.

Rhys’s passion for helping others has fueled his "Run for Change" initiative, and the event raised over $16,000, with support pouring in from his community and beyond.

By sharing his story, Rhys hopes to inspire other young people facing similar challenges. “This is about making sure no child goes through what I did,” he says. His courage and resilience highlight the critical importance of organisations like Women’s Refuge in providing safety and hope to families in need.

NZIS are proud to see Rhys using his skills and life experience for an amazing cause.
