Hashan Goonetilleke

Level 5 Diploma in Sports Management and Exercise Prescription

What attracted you to NZIS for your course?

The reason I chose NZIS is that it is one of the leading sport education providers in the country with lots of practical knowledge included. The structure of the programme appealed to me, and I could see that I would gain the skills I needed to for coaching cricket.

What courses did you complete at NZIS?

Completed Level 5 Diploma in Sports Management and Exercise Prescription and graduated with distinction, and currently studying Level 6 Advanced Diploma in Sports Management.

What did you really enjoy during your programme?

I really enjoy the environment in which the classes operate – we were on a field, so it was practical and we were involved in sports activities which I love.

Were the tutors helpful?

Yes they are extremely helpful. They always had the time and eagerness to teach and help us with anything we asked. I liked the way the tutors have an Open Door policy.

What is campus life like?

Campus life is really interesting. I’ve been able to build new relationships among the students and the staff, and this has been really enjoyable.

What are you doing now? If working where? What is your role?

I am currently completing my Level 6 at NZIS. I am also working as an endorsed cricket coach at Cricket Wellington, and as a Junior Cricket Coach at Wellington College. I’m doing what I love to do, and these are the opportunities you can find here in New Zealand.

Do you feel like you have a career path now?

Yes – absolutely. I believe that this course has helped me to develop my sports career as well as my coaching career.

What do you enjoy about the lifestyle in New Zealand?

It’s very peaceful here, and the people are really nice. New Zealand offers great health care and I feel very welcome here. However, the weather can be unpredictable, which can impact my time out on the field!

What attracted you to study in New Zealand?

New Zealand is a sports loving country and I have been an All Blacks fan since I was 8 years old. I believe that I could get more opportunities here in New Zealand in the areas of sport than in my country.

What career do you see yourself in after studying at NZIS?

I am looking forward to being a professional cricket coach following my passion for cricket.

What is one life lesson you learnt during your study and work?

I strongly believe that if you want to achieve something in life you need to work hard for it and enjoy it while you are at it!
