On Thursday 18 October, Wellington Airport was filled with excitement as the NZIS Men’s and Women’s Rugby Academy teams departed for Brisbane to compete in the 29th annual Byron Bay 7’s.
It was the first time we had been invited to send NZIS teams to this prestigious invitation only tournament, and our coaching staff prepared the players well for what was set to be an exciting week away with some tough competition!
Men’s and Women’s Rugby Academy teams did not just have the tournament game on their minds, players also practiced their leadership skills visiting coaching clinics at schools in Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
The experience provided an excellent opportunity for our students to use their coaching and leadership to inspire the next generation, promote New Zealand rugby and showcase NZIS’s rugby talent with a real Kiwi flavour.
Tania Paio, studying a Diploma in Sports Management and Exercise Prescription said, “The NZIS Byron Bay Rugby 7s Tour was outstanding and eye opening as well as great experience and opportunity for me, seeing it was my first time going overseas on a sports trip.
I really enjoyed everything, team bonding being one of them. Especially at the tournament, which would have to be the highlight because playing alongside the Rugby Academy girls I felt more than honoured and proud to not only play but grateful to create friendships.
It opened a sports path for myself personally, by wanting to continue to play more rugby. It is one trip that has made my year and will never forget.”
The Byron Bay tournament took place over Labour Weekend and involved several competitive matches against teams from across Australia.
Central Regional Manager, Andreas Kasoulides says; “NZIS have a long history of taking sports teams on international tours, we have in the past travelled to Australia, China, Japan, Kazakhstan and USA for cultural exchanges and competitive sports events. Tours expose students to the life of a professional athlete whilst gaining valuable experiences and life-long memories along the way.”
The New Zealand Institute of Sport Rugby Academy is open to all ages. To join the Academy you must be enrolled in one of our programmes. Enrol in a programme for 2019 now by enquiring with us today!
