What attracted you to NZIS for your course?

I heard about the course from a friend, and I was at a point where I wasn’t liking school anymore. I just wanted to play sport. In fact I represented New Zealand in AFL in 2014, and then last year I won Rookie of the Year for Rugby League at Point Chevalier. That’s what I love – playing sport!

What courses did you complete at NZIS?

•    Sports Zone – Level 2

•    Sports Study – Level 3

•    Diploma in Sport Management and Exercise Science - Level 5

•    Diploma in Sport – Sport Management – Level 6 - current

How has your course at NZIS helped you?

It has given me confidence and direction in my life. If I was just finishing school now I’d be wondering what to do. But instead, I know I have all these qualifications in sport, and have so many options now available to me. I can look at Sports Marketing, Event Management or even Coaching. It has given me a new perspective on my career, and really motivated me to learn and do the best I can.

Where are you working now? And what is your role?

I’m still studying, but I work part-time at Rebel Sports in Albany. I also coach rugby league on a casual basis.

Did your course at NZIS live up to your expectations?

Certainly did, and I’ve been here since 2015. I was really uncertain as to what I was going to do with my life. I’d moved countries, and hadn’t met many friends and felt really unmotivated. As I love sport and anything to do with sport, a friend told me about NZIS, and I thought I should give it a shot. It was the best thing I have done. I found a really supportive family environment, where I made friends easily, felt comfortable and started to achieve. The tutors were fantastic and suddenly I was getting top marks in subjects. I’d never achieved that before, and this gave me a huge boost in my confidence, which motivated me to do more.

Did you find the tutors informative?

Yes I did and really knowledgeable. They had an Open Door policy too, which was just great as we could just pop in and talk about things with them. I’m so grateful for the support they’ve given me.

What were the highlights of your course?

Gaining a scholarship, actually two now! I applied last year, and was so proud when it was announced. Now I’ve just got another one – really makes me smile. I’ve found my place!

What is one life lesson you learnt during your study and work?

I’ve learnt to believe in yourself. Even when things are down, if you can somehow change it up, things get better and then you’re on a new path. That’s what happened to me. NZIS has opened up new paths for me.
