NZIS Volleyball Academy

Volleyball is second only to soccer in sport participation in the world, with over 800 million players worldwide. The NZIS Academy team is at the pinnacle of high performance volleyball in New Zealand, having placed in the top 4 in the National Championships for 12 years running and having won the National Title in 2007.
Coached by former NZ Senior Women’s National Team Coach and Former Captain Shelley Addison, the NZIS Academy team includes six players from the current National Team. The strong tie-in of NZIS academic programmes to the Academy is consistently attested by the team composition, wherein players from all over New Zealand study, work and live in Wellington to play for NZIS.

The Academy team is captained by NZIS graduate and current staff member Rebecca To’omaga at middle blocker, and boasts veteran setter Lesa Laga, also a graduate of NZIS. Outside hitter Nadia Ng’uwn is a graduate of the NZIS Pre Police Programme and currently an Officer of the NZ Police Force. Middle blockers include Janelle Fraser, also a former student and current NZIS staff member, and Lindsay Huthnance, a recent addition to NZIS staff.
The NZIS Volleyball Academy programme also provides opportunities to train and compete internationally. The team completed a training 10-day camp in Japan in 2006 and has plans to participate in an exchange with the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
