Youth Guarantee 2010 programme

The New Zealand Institute of Sport launched its Youth Guarantee 2010 programme in November 2009, opening the doors to 16 and 17 year old school leavers to work towards a Certificate in Sports Studies, funded fully by the Tertiary Education Commission.

Announced in the 2009 Budget, the Youth Guarantee initiative is aimed at improving the educational achievements of youth, by giving them the opportunity to participate in fully funded vocational courses. Promising to "engage young people that may otherwise be left behind by our education system" it is targeted at teenagers who have completed Year 11 and made a start towards NCEA but who are finding that school is not for them.

Over 300 Careers Advisers, Physical Education Department Heads and Sports Coordinators from High Schools throughout New Zealand were invited to presentations across the three NZIS campuses, where Supervisory Tutors outlined how students can take advantage of the scheme in 2010.

Former Olympian and Wellington Academic Manager Tony Rogers is quick to point out the scheme's merits. "The Certificate in Sports Studies is an excellent foundation course for young people who want to kick-start their career in the Sport, Fitness and Recreation industry. It covers everything from exercise prescription, nutrition and sport injury management, to coaching, leadership and outdoor education. And with the regular course fee over $4000, students enrolling under the government's fully funded Youth Guarantee Programme are being given a very special opportunity to develop their skills and expand their career options."

The NZIS Certificate in Sport Studies was developed in response to a growing number of students from various sporting backgrounds and school sport academies. It also caters for those who have found the traditional school environment challenging and who do not meet the current academic requirements for higher tertiary level courses.
