NZIS Wellington Graduation 2009
The New Zealand Institute of Sport Wellington campus celebrated its 12th Annual Graduation ceremony at the Duxton Hotel on Wednesday 2 December. Over 400 students and their families, NZIS staff and special guests attended, including His Excellency Asi Blakelock High Commissioner of Samoa and his lovely wife Mrs. Helen Blakelock.
The audience was treated to a rousing Maori cultural performance by graduating students to open the ceremonies, followed by welcoming remarks by NZIS CEO Fiso John Fiso. Further entertainment followed in the form of Pacific Island dance and music performed by members of the graduating class.Â
Attendees enjoyed inspiring presentations by keynote speakers Silver Fern Sheryl Scanlan and legendary All Black Va'aiga Lealuga Tuigamala.Â
Other distinguished guests included Pastor Teremoana Tauira and Reverend Fatu Tufuga, Regional Superintendant of the Samoan Methodist Church, New Zealand Conference and Secretary of the Wellington Samoan Ministers Fraternity, who blessed the celebration. The Reverend was accompanied by his lovely wife Mrs. Suresa Tufuga, President of the Regional Women's Fellowship Group of the Methodist Church, New Zealand Conference.Â

Youth Guarantee 2010 programme
Announced in the 2009 Budget, the Youth Guarantee initiative is aimed at improving the educational achievements of youth, by giving them the opportunity to participate in fully funded vocational courses. Promising to "engage young people that may otherwise be left behind by our education system" it is targeted at teenagers who have completed Year 11 and made a start towards NCEA but who are finding that school is not for them.
Over 300 Careers Advisers, Physical Education Department Heads and Sports Coordinators from High Schools throughout New Zealand were invited to presentations across the three NZIS campuses, where Supervisory Tutors outlined how students can take advantage of the scheme in 2010.
