Graham Lowe – Level 2 Certificate in Foundation Skills

New Zealand Institute of Sport is proud to be teaming up with the legendary rugby league coach Graham Lowe to introduce a new way of looking at youth training and skill development all built around NZIS’s 20 years of educational excellence and Graham Lowe’s ‘Twelve Dynamic Principles’. These are common-sense philosophies which Graham has developed throughout his own career, and ones which he says can be applied in all areas of life for personal success.

The new partnership between NZIS and The Lowie Foundation, an independent New Zealand charity founded by rugby league legend Graham Lowe will be a game changer in high quality youth training. The Foundation strives to change young people’s lives through education and sport and starting August will deliver its unique Level 2 sport, recreation and fitness programme, ‘Kick for the Seagulls’ to sports mad students across NZIS’s Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch campuses.

The 18-week course has a strong focus on literacy and numeracy, using sport as a hook to engage students back into education and improve their academic achievement through a curriculum that is both engaging, relevant and fun. With the Graham Lowe foundation teaming up with NZIS to deliver this qualification also allows students access to first class training facilities and high level coaches, educators and athletic performance specialists.

This programme is intended to assist students in engaging or re-engaging with learning by developing and enhancing the foundational capabilities needed to pursue gainful education or employment pathways.

The programme is contextualised within a Sport and Recreation frame, with a particular focus on applied learning underpinning all knowledge acquisition and skill development. Much of the assessment will be project and team based in a sport and recreation context.

In addition to a broad range of foundational learning around Sport and Recreation, programme participants will also actively develop their soft skills, literacy and numeracy for a variety of purposes and the five key competencies, as per the New Zealand Curriculum, these being: thinking, relating to others, using language, symbols, and texts, participating and contributing and managing self.

On successful completion of this programme, learners will be able to progress to further study within the NZIS educational pathway, by completing our full Level 2 Sports Zone program, or our level 3 Certificate in Sport Studies. The foundation skills learnt through our L2 and L3 programs of study will then fully prepare students for tertiary study in one of our very popular Diploma in Sport programs. Learners will also be able to contribute effectively within their whānau and wider community, and work under general supervision in some entry-level roles including, but not limited to, those within the sport, recreation and fitness sectors.
