John Fiso - Chief Executive Officer

John Fiso: The New Zealand Institute of Sport - Qualifications in Sport, Fitness and Recreation in New Zealand

The importance of providing valuable educational opportunities and sport performance opportunities was a motivating force in the development of NZIS. CEO John Fiso has led the organisation starting with 18 students based in Porirua in its first year to a multi site provider in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. From a strong Phys Ed teaching background, having represented New Zealand in Volleyball and formerly a World University Team representative in Rugby League, Mr. Fiso has experienced life as a professional athlete and understands the importance of career options for young athletes.

Mr. Fiso has held board memberships and directorships both at the National and regional sport organisation level and currently sits on a number of private sector boards, translating to a wealth of managerial and executive experience. Mr. Fiso's vision is to encourage levels of excellence in students and athletes at NZIS and provide them with a number of opportunities to succeed. The "added value" approach to education and experiences such as the international sports tours and overseas employment opportunities have also been a driving force.

Shelley Addison - Quality Assurance Director

Shelley Addison: The New Zealand Institute of Sport - Qualifications in Sport, Fitness and Recreation in New Zealand

Shelley has been involved in education and high performance sport for many years and is the current National Women's Volleyball coach. She was a member of and captained the NZ Women's Volleyball team for over a decade. She was a team leader in the NZ Olympic team to Atlanta in 1996, in charge of the NZ Beach Volleyball team.

As a former Physical Education teacher and a sport administrator in a leading Regional Sports Trust she has a wide range of experience in sport management and currently heads the Volleyball New Zealand High Performance programme at NZIS

Taulalo Fiso - Strategic Director

nzis_taulalo_fiso_smlTaulalo came on board with NZIS as a Director following several years working as National Pacific Manager for ACC and in the public sector with the Ministry of Education and TEC. Taulalo brings extensive experience working in the education sector and keen understanding of stakeholder issues within the Pacific Island community.

Taulalo enjoys films, Touch rugby, attending community events and activities and spending time with his family.

Clayton Wiki - Finance Manager

Clayton joined NZIS in 2009, bringing 15 years accounting work experience in private and public sectors to the Institute. He has worked in diverse fields including construction, insurance, travel wholesale and as a Contractor to the Inland Revenue Department.

Clayton's interests are rugby, rugby league, soccer, reading, water sports and enjoying time with his family.

Lindsay Huthnance - Research, Business Development & Marketing Manager

nzis_lindsay_huthnanceLindsay joined the NZIS in 2009 shortly after immigrating to New Zealand from Washington, DC.  She is bilingual, with a Masters gained in Strasbourg, France.  Prior to arriving in NZ, Lindsay gained several years work experience in policy research and analysis.

Lindsay attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a full athletic scholarship for Volleyball.  She was the youngest player in NCAA history to accept a full scholarship - at the age of 15.  As a Tarheel she broke an Atlantic Coast Conference blocking record in her Freshman season.  Lindsay joined the NZ Women's Volleyball Team in 2009 and is a member of the NZIS Volleyball team that placed 2nd at the Club National Championships in August 2009.

Tony Rogers - National Academic Manager - Wellington Supervisory Tutor

Tony Rogers: The New Zealand Institute of Sport - Qualifications in Sport, Fitness and Recreation in New Zealand

Tony was a Primary school teacher for twenty years prior to becoming a full time National Sports Administrator for seven years with Athletics New Zealand as Competitions Manager and latterly as the High Performance Manager. He has also been involved in Track coaching, selection and management.

Tony was a middle distance athlete who represented New Zealand at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games.  He was a finalist in the 1500m at the Los Angeles Olympics.

Specialist Areas: Coaching – Track & Field, and Cross-country, event planning, athlete planning.

Latu To'omaga - Certificate Course Leader - Wellington Deputy Supervisory Tutor

latutoomagaLatu joined NZIS in 2009. He is primary school teaching trained but has worked within a much wider canvas of primary, intermediate and secondary schools for the past 12 years. Latu specialises in working with students with behavioural and learning difficulties, and emphasizes personal development and goal-setting in conjuntion with families.

Latu has additional expertise in working to inspire fitness students to achieve at their peak performance levels. He has worked for Les Mills and Bodyworks gyms as a group fitness instructor for the past 15 years and has taught specialist courses in Pacific movement.

Ian Cridland - Pre-Police Proficiency Course Leader

Ian Cridland: The New Zealand Institute of Sport - Qualifications in Sport, Fitness and Recreation in New Zealand

Ian is a senior tutor currently teaching his 9th year at NZIS after teaching sport, recreation and leisure in the UK for the previous 17 years. A very experienced and popular tutor, Ian's greatest area of expertise is working with youth and encouraging students to develop personal skills in areas outside of their comfort zone.

Specialist Areas: Literacy, Numeracy, Law and Business subjects.

Natu Taufale – Diploma Course Leader & NZIS Basketball Academy Director

Natu Taufale: The New Zealand Institute of Sport - Qualifications in Sport, Fitness and Recreation in New Zealand

Natu contributes to the coaching modules at NZIS. Natu's ability in the coaching of Basketball saw the NZIS U23 side take out the National title in 2005. He has won numerous NBL titles as a player as well as coaching with great success at the highest level in NZ Basketball as a BBNZ High Performance Coach and Coach of the Saints NBL team. He has also won many regional and national coaching awards over his career.

Catherine Redfearn – SportsZone Course Leader

Catherine Redfearn – SportsZone Course Leader

Catherine came to NZIS after teaching sport and recreation management in the UK for the previous eight years. Catherine has also managed a sports facility in the UK for three years. She is an avid sportsperson with a particular interest in soccer and has both played and coached for various clubs in the UK and now plays for Brooklyn Northern United.

Bethan Collings – Sport Studies Course Leader

Bethan joined the NZIS Auckland campus in 2007 following 4 years working as a Fitness Consultant and Personal Trainer and 5 years teaching in tertiary education in Cardiff, South Wales as a Lecturer in Sport. She also developed their Junior Netball Academy in the role of Academy Director. After a year lecturing in Neath Port Talbot College, Wales in 2008, Bethan returned to New Zealand to work in the NZIS Wellington site.
Bethan has an interest in all aspects of sport specific training and hopes to pursue her Masters in Sport and Exercise Science whilst in New Zealand.
She has worked and travelled extensively through the Jordan, Israel, Egypt, United States, Australia, Fiji, Samoa, Tahiti, Africa, South America, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia over the last 11 years.
Her main passions are netball, rugby, waterskiing, wakeboarding and art.

Martin Flavell - Personal Training Course Leader

nzis_martin_flavell_2Martin joined the NZIS staff in 2010 and comes from industry experience in Personal Training and Physiotherapy over the last 6 years. He has worked as a Physiotherapist for national representative sports and development teams including rugby, league, soccer, and netball. Martin has also competed nationally in Athletics, Volleyball and Soccer. Martin spent over 2 years in Ireland and Italy working in sports nutrition, fitness and teaching English as a foreign language.

Andreas has been involved with NZIS for over eight years as a Technical Consultant and ICT Facilitator. His drive, passion and teaching techniques have seen countless successes with students from all ages & backgrounds across all NZIS programmes.

James Stewart – Tutor

James completed the NZIS Diploma in Exercise Prescription in 2003. He has continued to gain greater experience and skills over the last 3 years through furthering his education. His specialties are exercise physiology and the application of science to improve sporting and exercise performance, as well as designing and prescribing training programs for people from all walks of life.

Mike has been involved in tertiary education since 1999 in the United Kingdom, before arriving in New Zealand in 2006. He studied at Liverpool University before completing his Postgraduate qualifications at the University of Chester and University of Greenwich. Mike has a wealth of experience in Assessment & Moderation, as well as Lesson Observations. Mike has worked for Ed Excel & OCR Examining Boards as an examiner in Sport & Physical Education. Alongside his educational responsibilities, Mike has organized team tours for cricket, soccer and skiing throughout Europe, including Belgium, Italy and the United States. Mike’s interests include keeping fit, travelling & reading autobiographies.

Lisa Roberts - Personal Training Course Leader

Lisa Roberts: The New Zealand Institute of Sport - Qualifications in Sport, Fitness and Recreation in New Zealand

Lisa has been involved in the Sport and Recreation industry for the past four years. During this time she has worked as a Personal Trainer, Sport Nutrition Consultant, and as an Instructor for water-skiing and equestrian. Lisa has a passion for sport nutrition and is working towards gaining her Postgraduate qualifications in nutritional science and tertiary education. Lisa enjoys a variety of sports including netball, waterskiing, off-road running and multisport events. A highlight for Lisa was competing in the Speight's Coast to Coast Multisport Race in 2005.

Robina Siteine-Tua – Tutor / Marketing Assistant / Special Projects Coordinator

Robina completed her Diploma in Sport Management at NZIS in 2006, graduating with a Merit Award with Distinction for outstanding Achievement & Excellence. She has come to NZIS with vast experience and knowledge in Sport and Event Management. Since 2003, she has managed her husband, heavy weight boxer David Tua. In 2007, she was a finalist in the NZ Samoan Sports Awards for Administrator (Manager) of the Year. Robina enjoys a variety of sports - rugby, basketball, netball and Boxing and she enjoys travelling the world and reading.

Christchurch:

Nick Burrow – Supervisory Tutor / Exercise Prescription Tutor

Nick Burrow: The New Zealand Institute of Sport - Qualifications in Sport, Fitness and Recreation in New Zealand

After 6 years completing bachelors and masters degrees in the US, Nick went on to work with both collegiate and professional athletes in various sports. He is a certified exercise physiologist through the American College of Sports Medicine and a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Nick brings the latest exercise science and conditioning knowledge and principles to ensure that students are receiving high quality academic and practical information. Nick was involved in athletics where he was a multiple NZ champion, US collegiate champion, and has represented NZ.

Specialist Areas: Sports strength & conditioning, exercise physiology, exercise metabolism.

Rohan Dewa – SportsZone Course Leader

Rohan has been working in the education sector for over 14 years, working with young people and helping them achieve their potential. He's been at NZIS since 2003 as the Sportszone Team Leader in Christchurch working with young foundation students.

Specialist Areas: Adventure based learning and outdoor education.

Chris Muagututi’a – Sports Teaching & Coaching Tutor

 

Chris Muagututi'a: The New Zealand Institute of Sport - Qualifications in Sport, Fitness and Recreation in New Zealand

Chris has been a Canterbury Touch Representative since 1994, and has represented New Zealand at the 2003 Touch World Cup and the 2005 All Nations Touch Tournament. He also represented Samoa at the 1999 Touch World Cup. In 2005 Chris won a World Championship gold medal as an assistant coach with the New Zealand U21 Mixed Touch Team and a gold medal with the New Zealand Mixed Open as a National Coach in 2005. His goal for 2007 -2008 is to win a National title as a coach with the Canterbury U21 Mixed (this has never been achieved for Canterbury). Chris has been appointed the Head Coach for the New Zealand U19 Mixed Team and has set sights to win gold again at the Youth Touch World Cup in 2009.

Stuart Murray – Sport Management Tutor

Stuart Murray – Sport  Management Tutor

Stuart arrived from the UK in November 2007 where he taught for eight years in a large tertiary college in Gloucestershire on sports management and business management courses. Combining his educational responsibilities, Stuart worked alongside players and coaches at premiership rugby team Gloucester Rugby, looking at the training methods and nutritional requirements of professional players. He has been responsible for the physical preparation of applicants for military and emergency service fitness entry tests. He became involved with the Army Cadet Force and an adult instructor, organising and leading outdoor activities and expeditions taking young adults out of their comfort zones. Stuart has a passion for sport and a passion to encourage others to achieve by pushing them to aim high and believe in themselves.

Craig Wilson - Exercise Prescription Tutor

Craig Wilson: The New Zealand Institute of Sport - Qualifications in Sport, Fitness and Recreation in New Zealand

Craig has over 10 years of experience in the education sector as a teacher and coach. After two years working as a teaching assistant and cricket professional in a top English public school, he spent three years in Japan teaching English and eventually managing a number of schools. Craig is an avid sportsman with particular interest in basketball, cricket, rugby and lawn bowls, and has played all of these at a representative level. His passion is applying the principles of nutrition and physiology to individual athletes, enabling them to reach their potential.

Specialist Areas: Anatomy and Physiology, Nutrition, Injury Rehabilitation, biomechanical analysis (both postural and dynamic), coaching (basketball and cricket).

Wellington:

Rebecca Toomaga – Executive Assistant

Rebecca Toomaga: The New Zealand Institute of Sport - Qualifications in Sport, Fitness and Recreation in New Zealand

Rebecca has been working at NZIS in various administration roles since she finished studying at the Institute in 1999. She has gained extensive event management experience while working at NZIS and was one of the lead organisers for Pasifically Wellington in 2007. She is the Captain of the NZIS Volleyball team that won the Club Nationals Championship in 2007, and was Vice Captain of the NZ National Women’s team that attended the World Championships Qualifying Round 2 in Kazakhstan in June 2009.

Grace Fiso – Finance Officer

Grace came to NZIS with a strong banking and customer service background - she worked for the ANZ Bank for 20 years, firstly in an operations role, before moving into retail banking. Her interests include volleyball and other sport in general, and she is a strong member within the Pacific Island community. She is currently studying HR and Management to build on her considerable experience in the Industry.

Miki Kitora – Administrator

Miki Kitora – Administration

Miki has been an integral part of the NZIS administration team since she finished her studies with the Institute in 2004. Originally from Japan, Miki has fully embraced life in New Zealand and her passion for volleyball. She was a member of the NZIS Women’s Volleyball team that became National Club Champions in 2007 and she was named MVP for the tournament. She is also the NZ Women’s Volleyball Team Trainer and Masseuse.

Janelle Fraser – Administrative Assistant

After studying at NZIS for two years and graduating with the Diploma in Sport Management last year, Janelle joined the NZIS Head Office administration team. Janelle is also member of the NZIS volleyball team that became national club champions in 2007. She has also competed in the National Women’s volleyball team in Vietnam in 2008.

Auckland:

Kitty Broughton – Site Administrator

Kitty Broughton – Site Administrator

Kitty has been involved in the sporting industry for the past 20 years, which included owning her own aerobics franchise, working as a personal trainer and competing in body sculpting competitions. She has been working for NZIS since 2006 in an administration and tutoring role. Some of her achievements include winning grade championships for squash and body sculpting.

Florence Taupo – Administrative Assistant

Florence joined the Auckland staff after graduating from the NZIS Certificate in Sport Management and Exercise Prescription programme and the NZIS Certificate in Pre Police Proficiency programme.

Florence is an avid Netball player, having played at Representative level for Auckland and Auckland Samoa.  She has also played club Netball for Pamure, Marist and Te Papa.

Christchurch:

Rrita Xharra

Rrita has been at NZIS for five years as the Site Administrator and has undertaken the role of Financial Controller for Platinum Sport. Originally from Kosovo, Rrita has been in NZ since 1995. While in NZ she has developed an interest in diving, fishing and snorkeling, and she loves to travel.

Jessamine Jackson - Head of the English Language Department

Jessamine Jackson - Head of the English Language Department

Jess has been teaching for five years. She has taught English as a second language at all levels from Beginners to Advanced students. Jess has also taught exam preparation classes in IELTS, TOEIC and CAE, as well as teaching papers from the NZ Diploma of Business. Before becoming a teacher, Jess worked as an examinations officer in England and as a student recruitment agent.

Katsu Takeuchi – International Programme Manager

Katsu Takeuchi – International Programme Manager

Katsu has been working in the International Department at NZIS since 1999, following his position with the Worldwide Rugby Cooperation. Originally from Japan, he enjoys bringing international visitors to study and enjoy life in New Zealand. He has successfully implemented new courses such as the Language and Rugby programme.

Siaosi Anamani - Special Projects Coordinator

nzis_siaosi_anamaniSiaosi works for the NZIS in the capacity of Health Programme Coordinator as well as Pacific Mentor. A graduate of NZIS, Siaosi has a unique perspective and contribution to guidance and support.

Siaosi has a strong rugby background, is a current Wellington club rugby player and a former NZ Under 19 player. In addition to leading health programmes in the Pacifc Island community of Wellington, he undertakes a significant portion of work with students in NZIS foundation courses.

Tolly has been involved in the sport and fitness industry for 6 years, specialising in areas of personal training, tutoring and mentoring. His sporting achievements include the NZ A rugby league team, NZ Invitation rugby league team, NZ Universities, Wellington Bartercard cup rugby league team, Professional Athlete (France).

Specialist Areas: Coaching of League and Touch, strength and conditioning.

Juliana Newman – Platinum Sport Administration

Juliana studied at the NZIS for three years, starting with the NZIS Certificate in Sport Studies and the NZIS Certificate in Sport Management and Exercise Prescription. Last year Juliana graduated with the NZIS Diploma in Sport Management. Juliana is a fortunate new addition to the NZIS Head Office administration team and supporting NZIS with special projects. She has a particular interest in Rugby and jas been playing for the Johnsonville Women’s Rugby Club for 4 years.
